China’s top diplomat Wang calls for moving past ‘old script’ of recurring conflicts in Middle East

China’s top diplomat Wang Yi on Monday called on parties involved in conflicts in the Middle East and Gulf to return to dialogue and make de-escalation their “immediate” priority.

Wang made the remarks during a meeting with visiting Kuwaiti Foreign Minister Sheikh Jarrah Jaber Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah in Beijing, according to a Chinese Foreign Ministry statement.

The two foreign ministers discussed evolving regional and international developments, focusing on diplomatic initiatives aimed at promoting stability, security and de-escalation across the Middle East.

“The old script of recurring conflict must not be replayed, and a new chapter of stability and prosperity should be opened as soon as possible,” Wang said, warning that the region has reached a “critical juncture.”

“China has always maintained that no matter how great the differences, a solution should be found at the negotiating table, not through gunfire,” he added.

Wang expressed hope that all parties involved would respond positively to the international community’s expectations for peace, prioritize the well-being of people in the region and return to dialogue and negotiations “as soon as possible.”

“Once the steps towards a ceasefire have been taken, there should be no turning back.”

China, he added, is willing to strengthen coordination with Kuwait and continue contributing to the restoration of regional peace and stability.

Wang also said Beijing is willing to maintain close cooperation with Kuwait on multilateral platforms to jointly safeguard multilateralism and the legitimate rights and interests of the Global South.

Jarrah, in turn, praised Beijing’s “constructive” role in mediating tensions involving the US, Israel and Iran.

He affirmed Kuwait’s commitment to strengthening communication and coordination with China, helping restore regional security and stability at an early date, and safeguarding the freedom and security of international shipping lanes.

The Kuwaiti foreign minister also reiterated his country’s firm adherence to the one-China principle and expressed willingness to deepen practical cooperation with China in investment, energy and multilateral affairs.

Wang expressed hope that Kuwait would ensure the safety of Chinese nationals, institutions and projects in the country.

Jarrah assured Wang that Kuwait attaches great importance to their safety and would continue providing protection.

This year marks the 55th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Kuwait.
