The Government of China has strengthened Liberia’s healthcare system with the donation of essential medicines and medical supplies to the John F. Kennedy (JFK) Medical Center, reaffirming its long-standing commitment to improving healthcare delivery and expanding medical cooperation between the two countries.

The donation, according to Chinese officials, is intended to help address shortages of critical medical supplies, replenish the hospital’s stock of essential medicines, and improve JFK Medical Center’s ability to respond to the healthcare needs of patients across Liberia.

Speaking during the donation ceremony, Chinese Ambassador to Liberia Yin Chengwu said the contribution represents China’s continued humanitarian support and commitment to improving the health and well-being of the Liberian people.

He explained that the donated items include medicines and medical materials designed to support the prevention and treatment of common and infectious diseases, as well as other essential clinical needs within the hospital.

Ambassador Yin said the donation goes beyond the provision of supplies, describing it as an investment in saving lives and strengthening Liberia’s healthcare resilience.

“Medical supplies are about saving lives,” Ambassador Yin said.

“Hopefully, with these supplies, a parent can remain healthy enough to earn a living, a child can stay in school instead of being confined to a hospital bed, and hospital resources can be made available for the next emergency.”

He said the support will help reduce pressure on healthcare workers, improve access to treatment, and enable JFK Medical Center to better serve patients requiring urgent medical attention.

The Chinese envoy described the donation as another milestone in the decades-long medical partnership between China and Liberia, recalling that cooperation between both countries in the health sector dates back to the establishment of the Chinese Medical Team Program in 1984.

Since then, successive teams of Chinese doctors, nurses, and healthcare professionals have provided medical services in Liberia, trained local healthcare workers, supported disease prevention programs, and assisted during major public health emergencies.

Ambassador Yin said the contributions of Chinese medical teams have received recognition from the Liberian Government, healthcare institutions, and citizens, describing the partnership as a reflection of the friendship and mutual support between the two nations.

He highlighted China’s continued engagement in Liberia’s health sector, including the recent China-Liberia Seminar on Public Health and Health Standardization Cooperation, which provided professional training opportunities for 38 Liberian healthcare workers in China.

According to the ambassador, the initiative further strengthened technical cooperation between healthcare professionals from both countries and expanded opportunities for knowledge exchange.

He also disclosed that he recently received a letter of appreciation from Liberia’s Ministry of Health acknowledging China’s continued contribution to improving healthcare services in Liberia.

Ambassador Yin recalled that China and Liberia have stood together during major health emergencies, including the Ebola outbreak and the COVID-19 pandemic, working jointly to protect public health and strengthen emergency response capacity.

He said the two countries continue to deepen their strategic partnership under the leadership of Chinese President Xi Jinping and Liberian President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Sr.

Reaffirming China’s commitment to Liberia’s healthcare development, Ambassador Yin pledged continued support for the work of the 18th Chinese Medical Team currently serving in Liberia.

He expressed confidence that medical cooperation between the two countries would continue to produce practical benefits for Liberians by improving healthcare access, strengthening medical capacity, and supporting the country’s broader development goals.

The Chinese envoy concluded by wishing JFK Medical Center continued success in delivering quality healthcare services and expressed hope that the friendship between China and Liberia would continue to grow stronger through expanded cooperation in the health sector.
