China May Cancel Trump Xi Summit If US Approves New Taiwan Arms Deals | Ukraine news

A planned White House meeting now faces a sensitive obstacle, as Beijing signals that one disputed issue could derail months of diplomacy.

China may cancel the September 24 meeting between Donald Trump and Xi Jinping if the United States approves new arms deals for Taiwan before then.

This is reported by Kyodo News.

According to sources, Chinese officials have already conveyed Beijing’s position to the American side. China is considering canceling the summit in response to a potential increase in Washington’s military support for Taiwan.

As preparations continue for a possible visit by Xi Jinping to Washington, Beijing has once again emphasized that the Taiwan issue is a “red line” in relations between China and the United States.

Donald Trump is interested in holding the meeting at the White House because he wants to showcase diplomatic achievements ahead of the November midterm congressional elections.

China considers democratic Taiwan part of its own territory and insists that it be reunified with the mainland. Beijing has not ruled out using force to achieve this goal.

At the same time, under the Taiwan Relations Act, the United States supplies the island with weapons needed to maintain its defensive capabilities. American military aid to Taiwan could be the very reason the meeting between the Chinese and U.S. leaders is called off.
