Ethiopia’s push for greener public transport reached a pivotal moment on May 12, as the first bus retrofitted under a national oil-to-gas conversion program completed a successful road test.
The project, a benchmark for China-Africa cooperation under the Belt and Road Initiative, is led by GCL Africa Industrial Group.
Ethiopia has long sought to ease its heavy reliance on imported fuel, which has strained public transport budgets and hindered sustainable growth. The government has therefore prioritized converting public buses to natural gas, envisioning it as a key model for enhancing public welfare and shifting to a greener economy.
The project gained momentum following an agreement between Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and Zhu Gongshan, chairman of China’s GCL Group, last October. It was designated a flagship national project for energy transition in Ethiopia.
Prior to its implementation, the project team spent over three months thoroughly evaluating local bus models and operating conditions. The technical proposal secured official approval and partnerships were formed with two major state-owned bus companies.
Despite challenges — including global supply chain delays, complex customs procedures, and a tight schedule overlapping with the Chinese New Year — the team persevered. Chinese technicians voluntarily postponed holiday family reunions to keep the project on track.
Following the successful pilot, the project is scaling up. Five dedicated workstations will operate 24/7, aiming to retrofit an average of 10 buses daily. The goal is to convert all 2,000-plus public buses in Addis Ababa within eight months, significantly accelerating the city’s green transport transition.
In a parallel effort, the team is also preparing to retrofit a fleet of government Mercedes-Benz buses.
Upon its full implementation, the project is set to substantially reduce public transport costs, improve urban livelihoods, and contribute to environmental protection in Ethiopia, showcasing a concrete step forward in China-Africa collaboration on green energy.
