Chevron has confirmed a significant new oil and gas condensate discovery offshore Angola, strengthening its exploration footprint across Sub-Saharan Africa.
The discovery was made at the 105-4X exploration well in Block 0, located in the prolific Lower Congo Basin. Drilled using the contracted rig Shelf Drilling Tenacious, the well encountered a hydrocarbon column exceeding 600 metres, including more than 90 metres of net pay.
The asset is operated by Chevron’s subsidiary, Cabinda Gulf Oil Co. Ltd.
Kevin McLachlan, Chevron’s vice president of exploration, described the find as having excellent reservoir quality and noted that technical teams are moving into a new phase of evaluation.
“The early results are encouraging, and additional work will help determine the resource’s full potential and possible development opportunities,” McLachlan said.
Chevron will assess whether the discovery can be tied back to nearby existing infrastructure. Subsea tiebacks offer a cost-effective, capital-efficient route to commercial production, making new fields far more competitive.
The find builds on recent operational momentum for Chevron in Angola. In December 2025, the company achieved first oil from its South N’dola Platform, also situated in Block 0, just over two years after construction commenced.
Chevron has operated in Angola since the 1930s, making its first offshore discovery in the country in 1966. The energy major currently produces approximately 300,000 net barrels of oil equivalent per day across Sub-Saharan Africa.
The Angolan success forms part of a broader African exploration strategy. Alongside recent expansion in Nigeria, Chevron is planning further drilling programs in Namibia, Nigeria, Guinea-Bissau, and Equatorial Guinea.
“Discoveries create value when they combine resource potential with a practical path to development,” McLachlan added.
“The opportunity we’re evaluating in Angola reflects both, and it reinforces our confidence in the broader exploration portfolio we’re building.”
