Campbell breaks meet record in Rovereto to cap best season

KINGSTON, Jamaica —Newly crowned Wanda Diamond League champion Rajindra Campbell ended his best season as a professional athlete by breaking the men’s shot put record at the Palio Citta’ Della Quercia in Rovereto, Italy — a World Athletics Continental Tour Silver meet — on Tuesday with 22.17m.
Campbell, who threw a Jamaican national record and world-leading 23.08m at the Diamond League final in Brussels, Belgium on Saturday, broke the three-year-old meet record of 21.88m set by Italy’s Zane Weir.
American Payton Otterdahl was second with 21.81m and Weir was third with 21.17m.
Commonwealth Games champion Romaine Beckford was third in the men’s high jump with 2.22m, the same height as Japan’s Tomohiro Shinno who was second, while Italy’s Manuel Lando won with 2.25m.
Two-time World Athletics Indoor bronze medallist Raymond Richards finished sixth with 2.16m.
Sabrina Dockery was third in the women’s 100m in 11.25 seconds (0.0m/s). American Gabrielle Thomas won in 11.02 seconds and Christania Williams of Austria was second in 11.18 seconds.
Kadrian Goldson was fourth in the men’s 100m in 10.12 seconds (0.5m/s). The race was won by South Africa’s Bayanda Walaza in a meeting record 9.91 seconds, bettering the 9.98 seconds set in 2021 by American Marvin Bracey.
Abdul Rasheed Saminu of Ghana was second in 10.01 seconds and Eliezer Adjibi of Canada was third in 10.09 seconds.
