Cameroon – WAFCON 2026 : the Indomitable Lionesses crowned champions of Africa

The Lionesses’ final felt like a community event. From the first whistle to the final cheer, Yaoundé pulsed to the rhythm of the match. It was a special evening for the residents of Nkoldongo, the birthplace of goalkeeper Michaely Bihina, with the performance of Michaely Bihina a local girl  and, above all, Cameroon’s first-ever continental title providing the backdrop.

The kick-off of the final between Cameroon and Malawi sets the tone. All eyes are fixed on the screens. Every Cameroonian attack raises the tension. Then comes the breakthrough. Marie Ngah opens the scoring in the 20th minute, sending the fans into raptures. The cheers drown out the commentary. Flags are raised, supporters jump, hug and celebrate. The neighbourhood realises that the Lionesses may be on the verge of a historic night.

We saw that Cameroon has a lot of talent. We just need to give the girls confidence and let them play. It was clear to see; there are many young local girls who have embraced the opportunity. So I think the state has recognised the talent much more. And there is plenty of it, there is more than enough.

The second goal sends the fan zone into complete euphoria. Naomi Ndjoah Eto doubles the lead in the 30th minute. Supporters erupt with joy. Some dance, while others wave the national flag. The tension gives way to confidence. In their eyes, there is one conviction: this team can go all the way. The Cameroonian dream is suddenly becoming a reality.

It is already inspiring the whole of the younger generation. It inspires all those who have believed in their dream and who continue to believe in their dream of becoming footballers, and who believe that better days lie ahead.

Then comes the third goal. Marie Ngah scores her second of the night, sending the neighbourhood where Michaely Bihina was born into wild celebrations. Chants, applause and embraces multiply. The final whistle confirms the triumph. Cameroon wins its first Women’s Africa Cup of Nations. A sporting victory, but also a powerful message to all those who now dream of following in the footsteps of the Lionesses.
