Cameroon tightens grip on telecoms

Cameroon’s telecoms regulator, the Telecommunications Regulatory Board (TRB), has ordered all electronic communications operators and service providers to update their details in its national directory by 30 September 2026, as part of a drive to strengthen consumer protection and clean up the sector.

In a press release issued this week, the regulator called on operators to complete an identification form on its official website ahead of the deadline.

TRB said the directory will serve as a comprehensive map of the communications ecosystem, allowing consumers to verify which companies are licensed and compliant, exposing fraudulent operators, and helping government agencies identify legitimate players in public procurement processes.

Philemon Zo’o Zame, TRB’s director general, said the initiative was designed to accurately map the ecosystem of operators at a time when digital services are expanding rapidly across Cameroon. 

“It will also promote greater confidence in the sector by identifying operators that comply with regulatory requirements and those that do not,” he said.

The update comes as the regulator balances consumer protection with the need to attract investment in telecommunications infrastructure, positioning itself as both watchdog and facilitator for the sector.

With the deadline approaching, TRB has urged operators to act quickly, describing the directory as a cornerstone of digital governance rather than a bureaucratic formality.
