Cameroon : Njukang Asong Highlights Year of Growth and Transformation for SOBA America

By Joseph Besong

Gathered in Minnesota for the 2026 SOBA America Convention, hundreds of SOBANs reflected on a year of growth, service, and institutional transformation as President Njukang Asong delivered a sweeping State of the Union Address that highlighted the organization’s achievements while charting an ambitious course for the future.

Addressing delegates from across the United States, Canada, and beyond, Asong described the past year as one marked by membership growth, strengthened governance, expanded community outreach, digital modernization, and historic reforms designed to place SOBA America on a stronger financial footing for generations to come.

The President of SOBA America hailed the past year as one of remarkable growth, institutional strengthening, and transformational progress, citing major achievements in membership expansion, community service, financial reforms, technological modernization, and long-term sustainability initiatives.

Delivering his address before a packed convention hall, Asong reflected on an administration that came into office with a commitment to build upon the successes of its predecessors while positioning the organization for a stronger future.

“Just over a year ago, you placed your trust in us—arguably the youngest administration in recent memory,” Asong said. “We embraced that victory not as a personal triumph, but as a sacred mandate: to consolidate SOBA America, to unite every chapter and every voice into one family, and to live out the true power of our democracy.”

Throughout his address, Asong emphasized that the administration’s focus has been on steady improvement rather than dramatic change, ensuring that the organization remains united while adapting to the demands of a rapidly evolving world.

Membership Growth Signals a Resurgence

One of the most significant indicators of progress has been the organization’s impressive membership growth.

According to Asong, SOBA America’s social forum expanded from 501 members to more than 800, while over 540 new SOBANs were registered during the past year alone—one of the highest membership gains recorded in recent history during a non-election cycle.

The organization is now working toward the ambitious target of reaching 1,000 members on its social platform while exceeding 750 registered members nationwide.

The growth reflects a deliberate effort to engage members across generations and chapters. To achieve that goal, the administration established eighteen committees aligned with key strategic priorities, creating new opportunities for members to contribute their expertise and leadership.

“We believed that leadership is not a title—it is a calling extended to every single SOBAN,” Asong noted.

The membership surge is widely viewed as a sign of renewed confidence in the organization and its future direction.

The convention’s General Assembly saw members endorse bold reforms designed to secure the long-term future of the organization.

Taking Service Beyond the Brotherhood

Beyond growing its ranks, SOBA America has also expanded its footprint in communities across North America.

The administration challenged every chapter to organize at least two community outreach programs annually and backed the initiative with financial support. Under the leadership of Community Outreach Chairman Scott Nyambi, chapters in California, DMV, Michigan, Minnesota, Houston, Dallas, and Montreal organized more than ten impactful outreach events aimed at supporting local communities and vulnerable populations.

Recognizing the importance of documenting these efforts, SOBA America launched its first-ever Community Outreach Magazine, highlighting the organization’s service projects and encouraging partnerships with SOBAN-owned businesses and supporters.

The initiative underscores the organization’s growing commitment to ensuring that its impact extends beyond the brotherhood and into the wider communities in which members live and work.

For many members, community service remains one of the most visible expressions of the values instilled at St. Joseph’s College Sasse.

Embracing Technology and Modernization

The administration also made significant investments in modernizing the organization’s operations.

Its archives were transferred to a secure digital platform, while the SOBA America website was upgraded into a more comprehensive information hub. The organization’s e-store expanded its product offerings, helping strengthen the SOBA America brand while creating an additional revenue stream.

Regular presidential newsletters continued to keep members informed and engaged, helping strengthen communication across chapters and regions.

These efforts form part of a broader strategy to ensure that SOBA America remains connected, responsive, and relevant in an increasingly digital age.

Looking ahead, the administration also intends to harness emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence and mobile applications, to improve member engagement and organizational efficiency.

Creating New Traditions

Another milestone highlighted by Asong was the successful launch of the inaugural SOBANESE Day in Dallas.

The event celebrated the women who support, inspire, and strengthen the brotherhood, creating a platform dedicated to appreciation, connection, and empowerment.

Asong described the gathering as a meaningful new tradition that recognizes the important role women play in the success of the SOBA family.

The event was widely praised by attendees and has already established itself as one of the organization’s most promising annual traditions.

In many ways, SOBANESE Day represented the administration’s broader commitment to inclusivity, appreciation, and strengthening the bonds that unite the extended SOBA family.

Strengthening Financial Sustainability

Financial sustainability featured prominently in the President’s address. Among the administration’s accomplishments was the strengthening of SAGI, SOBA America’s bereavement support fund. Through improved management and renewed fundraising efforts, including the designation of January as SAGI Month, the organization raised more than $40,000 in a single campaign—its strongest fundraising performance since the program was established.

The achievement reflects growing confidence among members and a renewed commitment to ensuring that the organization can effectively support its members during difficult times.

The success of SAGI has also reinforced the organization’s longstanding culture of solidarity and mutual support.

The 2026 SOBA America Convention concluded with renewed optimism, strengthened bonds, and a clear roadmap for the future.

Historic Reforms for a Stronger Future

Perhaps the most consequential developments came during the General Assembly sessions held as part of the Minnesota convention. Delegates approved a series of landmark reforms designed to strengthen SOBA America’s financial future and improve accountability. The measures included combining membership dues and convention levies, introducing a more sustainable tiered death-benefit system, and requiring maintenance plans for future projects at St. Joseph’s College Sasse before approval.

The General Assembly also strengthened financial standards and accountability mechanisms aimed at ensuring long-term sustainability.

Taken together, the decisions reached in Minnesota may well rank among the most significant governance reforms in SOBA America’s modern history.

By linking future projects to long-term maintenance and sustainability plans, delegates signaled a shift toward a more strategic and accountable approach to organizational development.

The reforms align closely with the convention’s broader focus on building a self-sustaining SOBA America capable of supporting future generations.

Expanding Global Partnerships

The administration also continued strengthening relationships beyond North America. Asong highlighted deeper collaboration with SOBA UK, SOBA Europe, SOBA Buea during its 50th anniversary celebrations, and Bishop Michael Bibi during his silver jubilee celebrations.

The administration’s maintenance-policy framework is now being promoted as a model that could potentially be adopted across the wider global SOBA network.

These engagements underscore SOBA America’s growing influence within the international SOBA community and its commitment to sharing best practices across chapters worldwide.

Honoring Brotherhood and Shared Values

While celebrating achievements, Asong also took time to reflect on the values that continue to bind SOBANs together.

He paid tribute to departed brothers, recognized the organization’s monthly prayer initiatives, and expressed gratitude for the support he personally received from members following the passing of his mother.

The moment served as a reminder that beyond projects, fundraising, and reforms, SOBA America remains first and foremost a brotherhood grounded in shared experiences, mutual support, and enduring friendships.

The Road Ahead

While celebrating the organization’s achievements, Asong acknowledged that substantial work remains ahead.

Among the administration’s top priorities is raising the SOBA America Endowment Fund to its target of $250,000. The organization is also pursuing plans to establish a SOBA America Event Center, which would provide a sustainable source of revenue and help reduce reliance on traditional fundraising activities.

Other priorities include expanding mentorship programs, increasing financial and social support for SOBANs facing economic challenges, utilizing technology-driven solutions, and strengthening support for students and projects at St. Joseph’s College Sasse.

These initiatives are designed to ensure that SOBA America remains resilient, relevant, and capable of serving future generations.

A Brotherhood Looking Forward

Reflecting on the organization’s journey over the past year, Asong expressed confidence that SOBA America has emerged stronger, more united, and better positioned for future success.

“Our union is stronger,” he declared. “Stronger because we chose unity over division. Stronger because we chose improvement over reinvention. Stronger because we chose service over silence.”

As delegates departed Minnesota following several days of deliberations, fellowship, fundraising, and celebration, the message from President Njukang Asong was unmistakable: SOBA America is not merely preserving a proud legacy—it is building a future capable of sustaining that legacy for generations to come.

For the hundreds of SOBANs who converged in Minnesota, the 2026 convention will likely be remembered not only for its camaraderie and celebrations, but also for the bold decisions that positioned the organization for long-term sustainability and growth.

Under the leadership of President Njukang Asong and his administration, SOBA America appears poised to enter a new chapter defined by unity, accountability, innovation, and an unwavering commitment to the values that have long bound the brotherhood together.

If the convention theme challenged SOBANs to think “Beyond Giving Back,” the outcomes in Minnesota suggested that the organization is already taking decisive steps toward becoming the self-sustaining institution envisioned by its members. The best chapters of the SOBA America story, as Asong reminded delegates, are still being written.
