Naivasha, Kenya — Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud made an unannounced visit to Kenya on Sunday, according to sources, as political and electoral tensions continue to build in Somalia.

Sources familiar with the matter said President Hassan Sheikh travelled to the town of Naivasha for high-level talks with Kenyan President William Ruto. Officials have not publicly disclosed the agenda of the meeting.
However, the discussions are understood to centre on regional developments as well as Somalia’s political and security situation at a time of increasing uncertainty over the country’s electoral process.
The visit comes amid growing concern among regional stakeholders over Somalia’s political deadlock and its potential impact on stability across the Horn of Africa.
According to informed sources, three East and Central African leaders are pushing for a political agreement in Somalia to avoid disruptions that could affect international support and security operations. Hundreds of regional troops remain deployed in Somalia, although funding constraints continue to present challenges.
Diplomatic activity is also expected to intensify in Nairobi, where international representatives are reportedly due to engage with President Hassan Sheikh and encourage both the Somali government and opposition groups to reach consensus on electoral issues.
The meetings take place against a backdrop of wider concerns over governance, security and the future direction of Somalia’s electoral process.
No official statement had been issued by either government at the time of publication.
