Cameroon End Super Falcons’ WAFCON Title Defence

Nigeria’s Super Falcons have been knocked out of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations after a 1-0 quarter-final defeat to Cameroon at the Larbi Zaouli Stadium in Casablanca on Sunday.

A 19th-minute free-kick from Myriam Nyadjou proved enough to send the Indomitable Lionesses into the semi-finals and secure their qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

Nigeria started strongly but fell behind when Nyadjou produced a superb effort from a free-kick that flew into the top corner beyond goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie.

The Super Falcons created several opportunities to equalise, but Cameroon goalkeeper Michaely Bihina repeatedly denied Nigeria’s forwards.

Bihina saved from Gift Monday shortly after Cameroon’s opener and continued to frustrate the defending champions throughout the match, including a point-blank stop against Uchenna Kanu and another save to deny Jennifer Echegini.

Nigeria coach Justin Madugu made several changes as the Falcons chased an equaliser, bringing on Kanu, Esther Okoronkwo and Toni Payne at different stages.

Nigeria continued to dominate possession after the break, but Bihina remained outstanding in the Cameroonian goal, keeping out efforts from Deborah Abiodun, Okoronkwo and Echegini.
