President Salva Kiir has eulogised former Minister of Finance and Planning Salvatore Garang Mabiordit as a dedicated public servant following his death in Juba on Thursday.

Mabiordit died at the AMI Clinic in Juba on August 20 from cardiac arrest, according to a statement from his family.

In a condolence message issued last evening, President Kiir described Mabiordit as an experienced technocrat who served the country in various capacities.

“It is with a heavy heart that I received the news of the passing of the Hon. Salvatore Garang Mabiordit, which occurred on the evening of August 20, 2026, at the AMI Clinic in Juba. Our nation has lost a dedicated public servant who served his country with distinction in various capacities,” he said in the statement issued by his office.

Kiir extended his condolences to Mabiordit’s family, the Kuac community and South Sudanese mourning his death.

“During this time of immense sorrow, I convey, on behalf of the Government and the people of South Sudan, my deepest sympathies to his family, the Kuac community, and all South Sudanese who are grieving this profound loss,” he condoned.

Mabiordit was the immediate former Minister of Finance. He was dismissed from the position in May, three months after his appointment in February.

He had intermittently served as Minister of Finance and Planning between 2018 and 2026.

Mabiordit also served as the first Undersecretary in the Ministry of Finance before rising to the ministerial level.

He was also a community leader in the Kuac Ayok community.

President Kiir said Mabiordit would be remembered for his humility, calm character and ability to make sound decisions when faced with challenges.

Kiir said the public grief following his death reflected Mabiordit’s contribution to the people of South Sudan.
