Cali Welcomes Petronio Alvarez Festival, the Great Celebration of Pacific Culture
Cali is preparing to host one of Colombia’s most important cultural celebrations with the 30th edition of the Petronio Alvarez Pacific Music Festival, which will take place from Aug. 9 to 17, 2026. Under the theme, “The Pacific’s Great House Dialogues with the World, Rooted in Its Heritage,” the event will bring together thousands of visitors to celebrate music, gastronomy, oral traditions, and artistic expressions that showcase the rich cultural heritage of Colombia’s Pacific coast.
This year’s edition carries special significance as it marks the festival’s 30th anniversary, reinforcing its role as the country’s leading platform for promoting Afro-Colombian cultural traditions. Over nine days, the capital of Valle del Cauca will welcome more than 2,000 artists, 47 competing musical groups, and approximately 183 exhibitors, who will share the knowledge, customs, and traditions of one of Colombia’s most culturally diverse regions.
The festival not only honors the legacy of Buenaventura-born musician Petronio Alvarez, but also seeks to strengthen the international recognition of Colombia’s Pacific cultural heritage through a program that combines music, academic discussions, entrepreneurship, and cultural exchange.
2026 Petronio Alvarez Festival program
The celebration began taking shape on Aug. 1 with the campaign “It’s Not August, It’s Petronio,” launched at the Los Cristales Open-Air Theater as a prelude to the festival. The initiative kicked off a citywide schedule designed to extend the festive atmosphere across Cali while introducing Pacific culture to both residents and visitors.
On Aug. 8, the traditional Petronito event will showcase young musicians and children’s ensembles, highlighting the next generation of performers dedicated to preserving traditional Pacific rhythms. The following day, the commemorative parade “Bundeando pa’ la Casa Grande” will wind through the city’s streets with the participation of 1,600 performers representing 23 Pacific communities, paying tribute to the people who have kept these cultural traditions alive.
From Aug. 10 to 11, several universities in Cali will host an academic program featuring discussions on cultural memory, heritage preservation, innovation, and the future of traditional music. Then, from Aug. 12 to 16, the city will host the Global Afro-Diasporic Summit, bringing together more than 60 Afro-descendant leaders and 50 national and international mayors to discuss development, culture, and inclusion.
Music, gastronomy, and tradition at Ciudadela Petronio
The heart of the festival will be the Alberto Galindo Sports Complex, home to the traditional Ciudadela Petronio from Aug. 9 to 17. The venue will host the festival’s music competition, where 47 groups will perform in categories including marimba, chirimía, Cauca violins, and other musical traditions representative of Colombia’s Pacific region.
The artistic lineup will also feature the highly anticipated Winners’ Reunion Concert, with renowned groups such as Grupo Saboreo, Semblanzas del Rio Guapi, Cantos de Rio, and Grupo Mavichi, alongside performances by celebrated artists including Herencia de Timbiqui, Grupo Bahíia, and La Contundencia. As part of the festival’s international outreach, special guests will include Uganda’s Masaka Kids Africana, adding a cross-cultural dimension to this year’s event.
Another highlight will be the launch of the book Los Retratos de Petronio (“Portraits of Petronio”), the result of a decade’s-long photographic research project documenting the festival’s evolution and the transformation of its participants over the past 30 years.
