Caitlin Clark Discusses Leaving Indiana Fever for FIBA World Cup with Team USA

It has been a brutal stretch for Caitlin Clark and the Indiana Fever. On Sunday, they concluded their five-game road trip with a big win over the Chicago Sky, 113-90. This was Indiana’s sixth game in the last 10 days.

Clark closed out the road trip with a 37-point eruption built on a career-high eight triples. The Fever snapped their two-game losing skid and improved to 25-14. They remain fifth in the standings with five games left in the regular season.

Indiana now gets four days off before its next game. Fever head coach Stephanie White acknowledged her team’s effort during this tough stretch and shared their plans for the upcoming four-day hiatus.

“Yeah, we’ll get a couple days off,” White said after the Sky game. “This was a grueling trip. We made a nice little star across the country.

“We’ll get some rest, a couple days off, and then we’ll come back and get back to work. We’ve got a game on Friday. We’re not on break yet. Get ourselves ready to go for Friday.”

Clark, who was sitting beside White during the postgame media availability session, could not help but react to her coach’s statement. The three-time All-Star commented on her imminent departure from the team for the FIBA Women’s World Cup.

“We don’t have a break,” Clark said, “… which we’re thankful for.”

White agreed, adding, “We’ll be off to Berlin.”

Clark will spearhead Team USA’s quest for a gold medal in the upcoming World Cup tournament. She is coming off an MVP win at the World Cup Qualifying Tournament in San Juan, Puerto Rico, in March.

Aliyah Boston will also leave the Fever to represent the U.S., along with White, who is part of the coaching staff.

The WNBA will be on break from Aug. 31 to Sept. 16 for the World Cup, which is scheduled for Sept. 4 to 13.

USA is in Group D with the Czech Republic, Italy and China. Clark and Co. will kick off their campaign with a matchup against China on Sept. 3.

The Fever, however, have one more game before the World Cup break. They head back home for a matchup against the Connecticut Sun on Friday.
