Britt pushes increased Space Force readiness legislation, stresses China’s growing space and counter-space capabilities

U.S. Sen. Katie Britt (R-Montgomery) is working to ensure America remains the preeminent power in space as China continues to position itself as both a global leader and top competitor in the final frontier.

In line with her mission, Britt introduced legislation this week to bolster U.S. Space Force readiness amid growing threats from the People’s Republic of China.

“It is well documented that China is determined to dominate the space domain and is working tirelessly to advance its space programs by investing in key sectors of the commercial space economy,” Britt said. “The Space Superiority Readiness Act of 2026 underscores how critical space is as a warfighting domain. The United States must be able to maintain space control in a potential conflict with the People’s Republic of China and have the resources and capability required to respond and react to future threats.”

She added, “I’m proud that Alabama has established itself as pivotal to our national space priorities, and I will continue fighting to ensure that our state and nation remain at the forefront of this mission.”

Specifically, the Space Superiority Readiness Act would require training programs for space operators focused on tactics, techniques and procedures. It would also improve visibility into China’s space sector by requiring, within 180 days of enactment, an unclassified report to Congress on Chinese commercial space capabilities and their potential military applications.

Additionally, the legislation helps bring greater focus to the importance of space readiness and ensures Congress continues to prioritize the capabilities needed to deter and respond to future threats.
