Boxing champion Zolani Tete shot dead in Mdantsane

Police are investigating the fatal shooting of renowned Eastern Cape-born boxing champion Zolani Tete in Mdantsane on Friday evening.

The incident occurred at about 6.30pm, with the 38-year-old Tete declared dead at the scene. A female victim has been rushed to hospital.

Tete’s manager Mlandeli Tengimfene confirmed that the boxer died after being accosted at his home by four armed men.

He also confirmed that Tete’s next-of-kin had been informed of his passing.

Provincial police spokesperson Brigadier Nobuntu Gantana confirmed that a murder investigation has been opened.

“The scene is currently active, and our officers are attending to all necessary protocols. We are unable to confirm the identity of the deceased at this time,” Gantana said.

Police said further information, including circumstances surrounding the shooting, will be released once the investigation has progressed.

No arrests have been made.

Tengimfene said the former two-time world champion was scheduled to return to the ring on November 29 after the end of his four-year ban.
