Boakai Breaks ground for 86km Mendicorma–Voinjama Highway

Mendicorma, Foya District, Lofa County, May 26, 2026 – President Joseph Nyuma Boakai Sr. has officially broken ground for the construction of an 86-kilometer asphalt highway connecting Mendicorma in Foya District to Voinjama City, the administrative seat of Lofa County.

At the groundbreaking ceremony on Saturday, May 23, 2026, President Boakai highlighted the strategic importance of the project, noting it will benefit not just Lofa County but also people of diverse cultures and commercial interests in the region.

He praised the Ministry of Public Works for overcoming initial setbacks and urged sustained momentum for timely completion.

The President also lauded Sierra Leonean President Julius Maada Bio for supporting bilateral and regional cooperation, especially given the project’s proximity to both Sierra Leone and Guinea. He called on Liberians to set aside divisive politics and focus on national development, emphasizing infrastructure, human capital, and opportunities for future generations.

“To those fighting, it is Liberia that matters most. We need development to create opportunities for the next generation,” President Boakai said.

He expressed confidence that the new highway will improve connectivity, boost trade, and enhance economic activities both within Lofa County and the broader Mano River Union region.

Several government officials, foreign diplomats, traditional leaders, and private sector partners attended the ceremony, hailing the project as a historic milestone with far-reaching benefits for Liberia and its neighbors.
