BluEnergies Ltd. and TotalEnergies are making headway on an exploration work program in the Harper basin off the coast of Liberia. Seismic reprocessing and seabed surveys are proceeding according to plan as the firms aim to develop drilling prospects in Blocks LB-26, LB-30, and LB-31.

The initiative includes reprocessing about 6,167 square kilometers of 3D seismic data, which BluEnergies reports is now more than half finished. TGS is handling this work, intended to sharpen seismic imaging and boost the detection of possible hydrocarbon-bearing formations.

At the same time, GeoPartners Ltd. is running a seabed survey covering roughly 4,045 square kilometers in water depths between 500 and 3,500 meters. The survey uses the R/V GYRE, a vessel owned and run by TDI-Brooks, a Texas-based offshore survey firm that focuses on geotechnical, geochemical, and marine science work.

The offshore campaign started on June 19 and involves multibeam echo sounder mapping, seabed geochemical sampling, and heat flow measurements. These efforts are meant to aid in interpreting basin-floor fan prospects and to refine future drilling site choices. Data collection is expected to wrap up in the third quarter of 2026, with integration into the updated 3D seismic interpretation slated for the fourth quarter.

Sergio Laura, vice president of exploration at BluEnergies, stated that the West Africa Transform Margin, which hosts the Harper basin, along with its conjugate South American Margin, are areas where basin floor fan plays are being actively and successfully explored, developed, and produced. Laura pointed out that recent licensing by major operators along the West African margin underscores the basins’ potential, citing developments such as Ghana’s Jubilee field, Namibia’s Venus discovery, and recent offshore finds in Côte d’Ivoire.

The companies stated that the exploration program is designed to refine drillable prospects and aid in choosing future well locations across the offshore Liberian area.
