Benghazi hosts first conference on agricultural development and food security

The Libyan House of Representatives’ Agriculture Follow-up Committee opened the “First Conference on Developing the Agricultural Sector and Enhancing Food Security in Libya” in Benghazi, attended by committee chairman Saeed Esbaq and acting head of the House of Representatives’ administrative office Rasmi Belruin, along with academics, experts and officials from the sector.

In his opening remarks, Esbaq stressed the central role of agriculture in achieving economic stability and national food security, calling for effective agricultural policies focused on increasing domestic production, supporting farmers and encouraging investment, as well as protecting natural resources and utilizing the findings of scientific research.

Belruin, for his part, highlighted the importance of the issue amid global challenges and climate change, stressing the need to raise public awareness and coordinate national efforts to advance the sector.

The conference sessions focused on identifying the obstacles facing agriculture in Libya and ways to increase production and develop agricultural investment.

The conference concluded with a draft of preliminary recommendations that will be discussed and refined before being submitted to the House of Representatives for adoption as a guiding framework for executive authorities, with the aim of developing sustainable agricultural policies and establishing a unified national vision.
