Bar Association, Max Planck Foundation sign deal to strengthen legal sector — Eye Radio

The South Sudan Bar Association has signed a partnership agreement with the Max Planck Foundation for International Peace and Rule of Law to strengthen the country’s legal sector.

The two-year Memorandum of Understanding aims to support the drafting and review of laws in line with international standards and South Sudan’s needs.

The agreement also focuses on training legal practitioners, developing continental laws and examining ways to align South Sudan’s legal system with broader legal frameworks.

Stephen Martin Nyichar, Secretary General of the South Sudan Bar Association, said the agreement will support capacity building and professional development among legal practitioners in the country.

“Today, mark the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the South Sudan Bar Association and the Max Planck Foundation for International Peace and Rule of Law. The MoU focuses on three key areas: first, building the capacity of legal practitioners; second, initiating the drafting of a code of ethics; and third, preparing a comparative analysis of the advantages and disadvantages of the two legal systems the country is working with namely, the common law system and the continental law system,” he said speaking to Eye Radio in an exclusive interview Monday.

Nyichar said the partnership is expected to bring lasting positive changes to the legal sector and support South Sudan’s efforts toward peace and development.
