Banyana Banyana Beat Nigeria to Keep 2027 World Cup Dream Alive
Sasol Banyana Banyana are one step from the FIFA Women’s World Cup after second-half goals from Thembi Kgatlana and Refiloe Jane secured a 2-1 win over Nigeria at the Moulay Rachid Stadium in Casablanca, Morocco, on Thursday, 13 August 2026.
Victory in the one-off qualifier play-off carries South Africa into the intercontinental play-offs for the 2027 tournament in Brazil, and ends the Super Falcons’ hopes altogether. Nigeria, ten-time African champions, will miss a Women’s World Cup for the first time in their history, having qualified for every edition since the competition began in 1991.
Both sides arrived in Casablanca nursing quarter-final defeats, South Africa beaten 2-1 by hosts Morocco and Nigeria edged 1-0 by Cameroon, and the tension told in a goalless opening half. Linda Motlhalo tried her luck from distance inside the opening ten minutes, Rasheedat Ajibade replied for Nigeria from outside the area, and Michelle Alozie sent the clearest chance of the half wide from the edge of the box.
Nigeria began the second half the stronger, with Asisat Oshoala and Uchenna Kanu both testing Kaylin Swart, whose save from a Kanu header proved the turning point of the night.

Within minutes South Africa broke at pace. Ronnel Donnelly’s moment of invention released Hildah Magaia, who squared for Kgatlana to finish past Chiamaka Nnadozie in the 56th minute for her fourth goal of the tournament.
Nnadozie denied Kgatlana a second with a fine low stop, but the Nigeria goalkeeper was beaten again in the 77th minute when Jane collected a half-cleared corner and drove from the edge of the box, her shot taking a deflection on its way in.
The captain’s night then turned. On the stroke of 90 minutes, following a VAR review, Jane was penalised for handling inside her own area and shown a second yellow card, and substitute Christy Ucheibe converted the penalty in the 93rd minute.
Reduced to ten players, South Africa held out through a frantic finish, Swart stretching out a left boot to deny Alozie an equaliser and earning the Woman of the Match award. Her teammates carried her from the field on their shoulders.
The win also breaks a recent pattern against the continent’s most decorated side, Nigeria having taken two wins and a draw from the previous three meetings, including the semi-final at the last edition on their way to a record-extending tenth title.
The result caps a campaign that began with a 2-1 defeat to Tanzania, recovered through a two-goal fightback for a 2-2 draw with Côte d’Ivoire and Kgatlana’s winner against Burkina Faso, and ended in the last eight against the hosts.
Ghana joined South Africa in the play-off route with a 2-1 win over Côte d’Ivoire in the earlier fixture at the Larbi Zaouli Stadium. The four semi-finalists, Cameroon, Malawi, Morocco and Algeria, have all qualified directly for Brazil, with Cameroon and tournament debutants Malawi contesting the final in Rabat on Sunday, 16 August 2026.
South Africa are chasing a third successive appearance at the global showpiece after their breakthrough at the 2023 tournament in Australia and New Zealand, where Banyana Banyana reached the last 16.
