Australia beat Zimbabwe in first ODI thanks to Renshaw century — Dawn
Australia’s cricket team defeated Zimbabwe by 59 runs in the first ODI match of the series in Harare, Zimbabwe. Australia scored 294 runs for eight wickets in 50 overs, while the hosts replied with 235 runs and were all out in 45 overs and one ball.
As Dawn reports, Matt Renshaw was named player of the match after scoring his maiden ODI century. He came to the crease with the score at 107-4 and made 109 runs off 94 balls. His innings included seven fours and three sixes.
Renshaw’s century
Renshaw batted at number six in his tenth ODI and surpassed his previous personal best in the format of 61 runs. He put on a 72-run partnership with Alex Carey, who scored 27 runs, and a 75-run stand with 19-year-old Oliver Peake, who made 30 runs.
“I was just trying to rebuild the innings. We lost a few wickets after the guys started really well,” Renshaw said. According to him, he did not feel pressure over the scoring rate and did not expect a ten-year gap between international centuries.

Cooper Connolly added 51 runs, including three sixes and four fours. Zimbabwe’s most successful bowler was 20-year-old Newman Nyamhuri, who took five wickets for 62 runs in nine overs.
Ellis takes five wickets
For Zimbabwe, Craig Ervine scored 59 runs and captain Sikandar Raza made 57. After the score reached 62-4, they added 98 runs in a fifth-wicket partnership. Australian fast bowler Nathan Ellis recorded his best ODI figures of five wickets for 31 runs. His wickets included Ervine and Brian Bennett, who opened Zimbabwe’s innings and scored 25 runs.
Australia won the toss before the match. The game in Harare was the first of three ODIs between the teams. After the series in Zimbabwe ends on Sunday, Australia will travel to South Africa, where it will play three ODIs from September 24 before playing three Test matches.
