Arab League, GCC condemn Houthi attacks, reaffirm support for regional security
Cairo/Riyadh, Aug. 10 (SANA) The Arab League and Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) condemned Houthi militia attacks in Yemen and against Saudi Arabia, reaffirming support for Yemen’s unity and sovereignty and calling for accountability over repeated violations.
Arab League Secretary-General Nabil Fahmi condemned Houthi attacks targeting several locations inside Yemen, which resulted in casualties and property damage.
During a phone call on Sunday with Yemeni Foreign Minister Afrah al-Zouba, Fahmi stressed the need to halt Iranian support for the Houthis, underscoring the import ance of respecting state sovereignty, territorial integrity and international law.
Fahmi reiterated the Arab League’s support for the Yemeni government and efforts to reach a comprehensive political solution that preserves Yemen’s unity, sovereignty and stability while safeguarding regional security and the interests of its peoples.
The Yemeni Joint Operations Command announced on Friday that 17 soldiers and officers were killed and others injured in a Houthi militia attack using ballistic missiles and drones against military positions in Yemen’s Hadramout and Marib provinces.
Meanwhile, GCC Secretary-General Jassem Mohammed Al Budaiwi renewed the council’s condemnation of repeated Houthi attacks against Saudi Arabia, describing them as a violation of the kingdom’s sovereignty and a threat to its security and territorial integrity.
Al Budaiwi welcomed a statement issued by UN Security Council members on Friday condemning Houthi missile attacks against Saudi Arabia since July 13, as well as attacks targeting commercial vessels since July 22.
He said GCC states strongly condemn the attacks against Saudi Arabia and warned that targeting commercial ships and threatening international maritime routes represent a dangerous escalation that threatens regional security and stability.
Al Budaiwi called on the international community to take a firm stance to hold the Houthi militia accountable for its attacks and repeated violations and urged an immediate halt to such actions.
He reaffirmed the GCC’s solidarity with Saudi Arabia and support for measures taken to protect its sovereignty and the safety of citizens and residents.
UN Security Council members also condemned Houthi missile attacks targeting Saudi Arabia and commercial vessels last Friday, stressing the need to avoid actions that could undermine peace efforts in Yemen and threaten international peace and security.
