Ansume de Beer and Kristi Snyman Strike Gold for South Africa in Accra

South Africa’s women have collected three medals through three days of competition at the 24th CAA African Senior Athletics Championships, taking the team’s tally to two gold and one bronze by the close of action at the University of Ghana Stadium in Legon, Accra, Ghana on Thursday, 14 May 2026.

Field-event athletes have led the South African women’s charge, with high jumper Kristi Snyman and pole vaulter Ansume de Beer both topping the podium in their respective disciplines.

Prudence Sekgodiso Leads 19 South African Women into African Athletics Title Defence in Accra

Hammer thrower Leandri Holtzhausen rounded out the women’s medal contribution, claiming a bronze in her event.

The South African team is defending its overall continental title after finishing top of the table at the 2024 African Athletics Championships in Douala, Cameroon, where the squad won 19 medals (nine gold, four silver and six bronze).

“The mandate of the team is that they must defend the crown and bring back many medals led by gold,” said the Deputy President and Acting President of Athletics South Africa, John Mathane.

“So, the war to acquire personal and national glory continues. We urge the team to remain focussed and the athletes to enjoy themselves in the process.”

The 24th CAA African Senior Athletics Championships run from Tuesday, 12 May to Sunday, 17 May 2026.
