Algeria’s Sahel Bet: Why Niger, Mali & Burkina Faso Matter To Counter Morocco

Watch this video as Firstpost examines Algeria’s growing push into the Sahel and what its latest military support for Niger reveals about a major shift in regional power. Algiers has supplied Niger with four military helicopters, including two attack gunships, along with missiles, ammunition and spare parts, as it deepens security cooperation with Niamey. But the relationship goes far beyond defence. Algeria is also backing energy projects, including the Trans-Saharan Gas Pipeline, which links Nigerian gas to Europe via Niger and Algeria. At the same time, Algiers is repairing ties with Mali while navigating the growing influence of Russia, the Alliance of Sahel States and Morocco’s competing Atlantic strategy. Algeria’s moves suggest the Sahel is becoming central to its security, energy and geopolitical ambitions. As instability spreads across the region, Algiers appears determined to turn its southern border from a vulnerability into a source of strategic influence.
