A ferry carrying 95 people capsized on Lake Kariba in Zimbabwe

A boat carrying 90 passengers and five crew members capsized on Lake Kariba in Zimbabwe, according to the Zimbabwean police. The rescue operation following the accident is ongoing.

Law enforcement officials have urged the public not to speculate on the number of victims. The police stated that official information regarding those rescued, injured, and killed will be released once work at the scene is complete.

Residents of rural areas use this vessel to travel to the city of Kariba. The city is located on the northern shore of Lake Kariba, near the border with Zambia.

Zimbabwean Member of Parliament Mutsa Murombedzi stated that the boat was traveling from Kariba to Chalala when it encountered strong winds. According to her, the crossing usually takes about five hours.

Murombedzi also posted a video on social media platform X showing the boat, which she said had set out earlier that day. She identified it as the Mbuya Nehanda and called on officials to disclose the exact number of people who were on board.
