The story

Thabo Cele did not have to wait long for his first taste of silverware at Masandawana, with the newly signed midfielder already celebrating a trophy just two weeks into his new chapter at Chloorkop.

The 28-year-old was part of the matchday squad as Sundowns defeated Saudi Arabian giants Al Ahli 2-1 in Pretoria on Saturday to lift the 2026 FIFA African-Asian-Pacific Cup, although he remained an unused substitute on the day.

Still, the occasion offered Cele an early glimpse of the winning culture at his new club, and one he was keen to relive with his followers online. It has been just two weeks since Sundowns confirmed the arrival of “Induna Yendawo” on a free transfer, three days after his departure from Kaizer Chiefs was announced following a mutual agreement between the midfielder and Amakhosi.

Cele had become surplus to requirements at Naturena under new head coach Fernando Da Cruz, but his move to Sundowns has immediately given him a fresh opportunity to compete at one of the country’s biggest clubs.

At Chloorkop, the midfielder faces stiff competition for a starting berth, with Teboho Mokoena, Marcelo Allende, Bathusi Aubaas and rising youngster Gomolemo Kekana among the players vying for midfield places.

A couple of days after Sundowns’ victory over Al Ahli, Cele took to Instagram to share a carousel of photographs from the trophy celebrations. The midfielder kept his message simple, tagging his new football home as he celebrated his first major moment in the famous yellow and blue.

The victory also keeps Sundowns’ international campaign moving, with the African champions now set to face the winner of the Derby of the Americas, contested between Mexican side Toluca and a South American representative.

A victory in that tie would send Masandawana into the FIFA Intercontinental Cup final, where European champions Paris Saint-Germain await. For Cele, the journey with his new club has only just begun — but the first trophy is already safely in the cabinet.
