Olton rolls past Sudan 41-0 in homecoming win

Olton High School celebrated homecoming Friday with a commanding 41-0 victory against Sudan, pairing an overwhelming offense with a defense that refused to surrender a point.

Olton coach James Dougherty said his team set the tone early, particularly defensively.

“I thought we started the game well,” Dougherty said. “I thought we got after it defensively. Obviously, we had the shutout.”

Dougherty credited quarterback Brady Azam’s mobility and the work of Olton’s offensive and defensive lines. Despite limited depth up front, Dougherty said the players stepped up and helped Olton control the game.

The defense preserved the shutout with a goal-line stand late in the contest. Dougherty said the sequence gave his players valuable experience that is difficult to recreate during practice.

Although pleased with the result, Dougherty said Olton must become more consistent and maintain its intensity for all four quarters.

“Just because we’re up and just because we got the shutout doesn’t mean that the game’s over,” he said. “We’ve got to put together a four-quarter game.”

During halftime, after performances by both schools’ bands, the homecoming court was introduced. From among them Kaybree Ramon was crowned Olton High School’s homecoming queen.

Olton will turn its attention next to Lockney. Dougherty described the upcoming opponent as a scrappy team that applies defensive pressure and uses multiple formations on offense.

He said Olton’s preparation will focus on playing faster and more efficiently on offense while becoming stronger and more disciplined defensively.
