Banyana Banyana’s 2027 World Cup dream remains alive. They progressed to the next stage of the play-offs after a spirited performance resulted in a 2-1 victory over rivals Nigeria at the Moulay Rachid Stadium in Casablanca on Thursday night.

Thembi Kgatlana and Refiloe Jane scored Banyana’s goals. The team played as a cohesive unit throughout the match, displaying significant improvement and confidence compared to their WAFCON campaign, which saw them eliminated in the quarter-finals.

Both teams entered the match under intense scrutiny following underwhelming performances that cost them direct qualification for the World Cup, failing to reach the WAFCON semi-finals.

Banyana responded emphatically. Despite a nervy ending, during which captain Refiloe Jane was sent off for a second yellow card after a handball, Banyana secured the win. Nigeria’s Uchenna Ucheibe converted a late penalty, but it was not enough to deny South Africa.

South Africa now advances to the next inter-continental play-off phase alongside Ghana. They will compete against Uzbekistan, Chinese Taipei, Ecuador, and Papua New Guinea for two spots in the final round.

Success in that stage will see them join other nations in the final round, competing against two Concacaf teams, one UEFA team, and Venezuela for three World Cup qualification spots.

While empty seats reflected poor tournament marketing, there was no love lost between the arch-rivals, and the tension was palpable.

The Banyana coaching staff demonstrated improved organisation. There was clear synergy between Desiree Ellis and her assistants as they took turns issuing instructions, avoiding the miscommunication seen in previous matches.

This organisation permeated the squad. Banyana controlled the tempo, with captains Refiloe Jane and Rasheedat Ajibade locked in a midfield battle.

The first half was evenly contested. Possession was primarily fought in midfield, with few genuine scoring opportunities testing goalkeepers Kaylin Swart and Chiamaka Nnadozie.

Despite vocal support for Nigeria, Banyana displayed commendable mental fortitude throughout the first half.

Nigeria returned from the break with renewed vigor, showing better fluidity. However, they lacked a clinical edge. Banyana relied on mental strength to regain control. When the Super Falcons lost possession, Ronnel Donnelly played Hildah Magaia through, who unselfishly set up an unmarked Thembi Kgatlana to slot the ball past Nnadozie.

Kgatlana’s timely goal silenced the Nigerian supporters, coming shortly after the substitution of Asisat Oshoala.

Banyana survived a scare shortly after, when Kaylin Swart made a stunning save to parry Uchenna Kanu’s header, underscoring her importance to the team following her earlier injury scare.

A spirited rendition of “Mbobo Vuleka” erupted from the South African supporters. It proved to be a good omen: Refiloe Jane latched onto a loose ball inside the box to score the winner in her 155th appearance.

Led by Player of the Match Kaylin Swart, who made another vital late save, Banyana held on for a crucial win. They must now focus on securing a spot in the final round of the World Cup qualification play-offs later this year.
