Scarlet Lady cruise ship docks in Crete after Turkey, Egypt deny ports

The chartered cruise ship Scarlet Lady carrying mostly LGBTQ passengers reached the port of Souda on the Greek island of Crete on Friday morning after Turkey and Egypt refused to let it dock, Greek broadcaster ERT reported.

About 1,860 passengers and 1,139 crew members are on board, ERT reported. LGBTQ is an abbreviation for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer.

The Scarlet Lady has been chartered for a one-month themed cruise by US tour operator Atlantis Events. The ship had originally been due to call at the Turkish ports of Kuşadası and Istanbul among others.

Turkish authorities banned this, citing the country’s “moral values.” Greek media then reported that Egypt also refused entry, prompting a last-minute change of route.

After approval by the Greek Shipping Ministry, passengers were given the chance to take excursions to various sights on Crete. After the stay in Souda, the Scarlet Lady is to continue its journey as planned towards Montenegro, ERT reported, citing the responsible authorities.
