Jamaica native in Navy’s supply command named Sailor of the Year – QNS

Jamaica native and U.S. Navy Petty Officer 2nd Class Robert Kerr was recently named Sailor of the Year while serving at the Naval Supply Systems Command Weapon Systems Support (NAVSUP WSS) in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
Kerr received the honor for exemplifying outstanding dedication to duty and superior performance through leadership, fleet support and mentorship, going above and beyond his assigned job.
“I learned to stay resilient under pressure and respect people from all walks of life,” Kerr said. “Those values have guided me throughout my time in the Navy and have helped me grow as a sailor and leader.”
Currently working as a logistical specialist, Kerr has been serving in the U.S. Navy for six years. He earned a Bachelor’s degree in supply chain management at the United States Naval Community College. Prior to that, he graduated from Anchovy High School on the island of Jamaica in 2014.
“Growing up with my background taught me the value of hard work and resilience,” Kerr said. “I joined the U.S.s Navy to serve something greater than myself, challenge my limits and create opportunities for my future while proudly representing my hometown and country.”
While Kerr has been honored for his accomplishments and contributions to the Navy in the past, he felt this one was more special.
“One of my proudest moments while in the Navy was being nominated and selected for NAVUSP WSS Sailor of the Year,” Kerr said. “This award means more than recognition; it represents the trust placed in me by my leaders and peers. It validates my hard work, serving the Navy and supporting those around me.”
NAVSUP WSS is responsible for providing the Navy, Marine Corps. and joint and allied forces with program and supply support for weapon systems that keep the U.S. naval forces mission-ready.
Kerr serves as part of a Navy that operates around the world and around the clock to promote the prosperity and security of the U.S.
“Serving in the Navy means purpose. There are endless opportunities to grow as a leader and to leave a positive impact on those around me,” Kerr said. “I want to thank my mom for the love, support and for always pushing me to do more.”
Navy officials emphasize that the prosperity of the U.S. is directly linked to being able to recruit and retain talented Americans. This is especially important today, with 90% of global commerce being shipped by sea and internet access being reliant upon the security of undersea fiber-optic cables.
