Uganda U17 Men’s Football National Team, the Cubs made an impressive start to the 2026 AFCON U17 after defeating DR Congo 3-0 in their first game played on Wednesday in Rabat, Morocco.
The team under the stewardship of coach Laryea Kingston put up a remarkable performance to claim maximum points despite ending the game with a player less following the sending off of defender Trevor Mubiru.
Captain Owen Mukisa, Nicholas Kawooya and substitute Abdushakur Babi scored a goal each to guide Uganda to victory.
Right from the start, Uganda looked the better side, dominating possession with Henry Muhoozi as the main conductor in the midfield.
Skipper Mukisa broke the deadlock in the 37th minute heading from close range off a trivela pass by Mubiru.
At the stroke of halftime, Kawooya double Uganda’s lead. He dashed to the near post to head home from Mukisa’s well delivered corner kick.
Mubiru was shown a second yellow card for holding the ball and thus getting sent off.
Despite playing with a man less, Uganda went ahead to grab the third goal a few minutes later through Babi to put the icing on the cake.
Uganda will return to action on Saturday against Cameroon. In the same group (B), Ivory Coast who defeated Cameroon 2-0 today will be up against DR Congo.
