44 Dead in Zimbabwe Boat Capsize | Ratopati

Kathmandu. The death toll has reached 44 as a boat carrying excessive passengers capsized in Zimbabwe’s Kariba Lake, police said on Wednesday.

Police said 44 bodies were recovered from the lake, which lies in the border area between Zimbabwe and Zambia. Police have not provided information on how many were injured or missing in the ferry accident operated by a government agency on Tuesday.

According to Zimbabwe’s disaster management agency, at least 114 passengers and five crew members were on board the boat at the time of the accident.

The total number of passengers on the boat has not been confirmed. Officials said that only the details of passengers who purchased tickets are available, and children of ages not requiring tickets may also have been on board.

According to officials, the boat’s capacity was only 90 people. The boat used to ferry residents of rural areas around Kariba Lake to Kariba town on the lake’s shore.

Search and rescue operations for the missing are ongoing after the accident.
