2027: Niger Govt intensifies security measures

The Niger State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring peaceful, credible, free, and fair elections in 2027 through improved security coordination, intelligence gathering, and community engagement across the state.

Maurice Bello, commissioner for Homeland Security, disclosed this in an interview with BusinessDay while outlining the state government’s ongoing efforts to strengthen security and curb criminal activities.

According to Bello, the government adopted a new approach to tackling insecurity shortly after assuming office about six months ago, stressing that the protection of lives and property remains a core responsibility of government.

He explained that one of the major challenges identified was the reluctance of residents to provide useful information and early warning signals to security agencies. To address this, he noted that the government intensified advocacy and sensitisation campaigns aimed at encouraging citizens to share intelligence with assurances of strict confidentiality.

“We realised the need to adopt a new approach to addressing security challenges, not just because of the elections, but because government must ensure that people go about their lawful activities peacefully,” he said.

The commissioner noted that the state government works closely with security agencies including the Army, DSS, Police, traditional rulers, opinion leaders, and community stakeholders to strengthen security management in the state.

He added that the administration of Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago has prioritised investment in the security sector to create a safe environment for businesses, tourism, and development.

Bello also highlighted the state’s “Operation Know Your Neighbour” initiative, designed to encourage residents to monitor and report suspicious activities within their communities.

He warned that unusual activities such as stockpiling food items, storing fuel in large quantities, or suspicious motorcycle movements could indicate logistical support for terrorists or bandits.

The commissioner further stated that the government was already identifying vulnerable areas ahead of the 2027 elections in collaboration with the Independent National Electoral Commission and security agencies.

Bello noted that areas classified as security flashpoints or red zones would be closely monitored, while voters in unsafe locations could be relocated to nearby secure areas to enable them participate in the elections without fear.

He said the arrangement had already been communicated to political parties, traditional institutions, media organisations, and community stakeholders to ensure cooperation and proper awareness.

“Our goal is to ensure that the people of Niger State participate in a peaceful, credible, free, and fair election in 2027,” Bello stated.
