117 High-Profile Prisoners Linked to Peace Dialogues Transferred By Order of President De la Espriella

In one of his very first acts as President of Colombia, Abelardo De La Espriella ordered the immediate transfer of 117 high-profile prisoners. These specific individuals, who were previously linked to peace processes and negotiations across the country, have now been relocated to maximum and high-security facilities.

The National Penitentiary and Prison Institute (INPEC) executed the mass transfer following direct instructions from the new President. The inmates were moved to various high-security prisons distributed throughout the national territory, including facilities in El Barne, Ibague, Palmira, La Dorada, Valledupar, Girón, Medellin, and Bogota.

According to an official press release issued by the Office of the President, this penitentiary measure is designed to neutralize criminal operations originating from inside the prisons. The administration aims to severely restrict the operational capacity of illegal organizations by raising security protocols and surveillance.

Specifically, the transfers are intended to prevent these high-profile inmates from coordinating with external armed groups and criminal structures. Furthermore, the move deliberately strips these prisoners of any special treatment, access, or comforts they may have enjoyed in their previous detention centers.

The Return of “Law and Order” to the Penitentiary System

The De la Espriella administration framed this swift action as the beginning of a broader effort to reestablish absolute state dominance over the country’s correctional facilities. The government emphasized that it would strictly enforce judicial orders and exercise its penitentiary control with firm authority and within the constitutional framework.

“This is one of the first decisions adopted by the National Government to recover permanent control of the prisons, guarantee strict compliance with the law, and ensure the effective execution of judicial orders,” the official statement read.

The new administration issued a stern warning to illegal networks, concluding the statement by declaring that anyone attempting to use the country’s prisons as operational centers for crime will be subjected to the full weight of the law.
