Motorcyclist Crashes Into Bus and Ends Up Inside Vehicle

A motorcyclist crashed into a public bus around midday on Sunday, Aug. 30, in Buga, southern Colombia, and was thrown through an open door into the passenger compartment. Security cameras captured the crash at the intersection of Calle 7 and Carrera 13.

Buga, also known as Guadalajara de Buga, is a city of about 132,000 people in Valle del Cauca Department, in southwestern Colombia. It sits in the Cauca River valley between Cali and Armenia, with the Central Andes rising to the east.

The video shows the bus crossing the intersection as the motorcycle approaches. The motorcycle strikes the open bus doorway, sending the rider tumbling into the passenger area near a rider in the back. The passenger was not injured.

The rider landed inside the bus

The open door appears to have changed the rider’s trajectory. Instead of falling onto the road after the collision, he was thrown through the doorway and landed among the seats.

Bus driver Inocencio Juspian said he initially did not understand what had happened. He felt the impact and saw a person inside the bus, so he thought a passenger had fallen. He glanced at the motorcycle outside, then realized the rider had been thrown inside the vehicle.

The impact damaged the bus door, structural supports, handrails, and a seat. The vehicle was later taken out of service.

The motorcyclist dismounted, checked his vehicle, and chose to leave it behind on foot. Juspian stated that he appeared disoriented after the collision. Security camera footage also shows that he was not wearing a helmet.

Police arrived after the rider left

By the time police arrived, the motorcyclist was gone. He had left his motorcycle at the scene, and authorities took it into municipal custody.

Mauricio Pereira, Buga’s Mobility Secretary, said police did not make contact with the rider. Officials also checked local medical centers to determine whether he had sought treatment, but the latest reports had not identified anyone matching the description.

His medical condition remained unconfirmed. Authorities were reviewing the circumstances of the crash. Local reports indicate that the motorcyclist may have failed to stop at a traffic signal, although that has not been conclusively established.

Investigators were using the security footage and the motorcycle left at the scene as they worked to establish what happened and identify the rider.

Motorcyclists account for most road deaths in Colombia

The crash in Buga occurred as motorcycles continued to account for most road deaths in Colombia. Preliminary figures from the National Road Safety Observatory show that 3,422 motorcyclists died in road crashes between January and August 2025. They represented 63% of the 5,472 people killed on the country’s roads during those eight months.

Figures cited by El Tiempo also indicate that motorcycles were involved in roughly eight out of every 10 fatal crashes during the same period.

Colombian regulations require motorcycle riders and passengers to wear a properly fitted and secured helmet. The Ministry of Transport also recommends gloves, protective jackets, reflective clothing, and equipment designed to protect the legs.

The investigation into the Buga accident remains open, and authorities continue trying to identify and locate the reckless motorcyclist.
