Colombia, a cycling powerhouse, is gearing up for the 2026 World Cycling Championships in Montreal, but there’s plenty happening in South America in the meantime to fill the newspapers. Unfortunately, that’s not always positive, as footage and posts on social media show.

First, William Colorado, a 22-year-old Colombian, who proudly shared footage of a training session in Colombia. The question is: where do you draw the line? During a training session riding behind a moped, Colorado—a rising star with the continental team Nu Colombia—reached a top speed of 115 kmph.

115 kilometers per hour—it all sounds sensational. But the footage of the young cyclist also shows that he took major risks on a descent and on flat terrain. He passed trucks and rode on the wrong side of the road…

We’ll see Colorado in action in September at the World Cycling Championships in Montreal, Canada. There, the young rider will compete in the men’s U23 road race, which will take place on September 25.

Oscar Sevilla threatened while preventing bicycle theft

Another notable story from Colombia: a suspected bicycle theft involving former cyclist Oscar Sevilla. The 49-year-old cyclist is still active as a pro with Team Medellín-EPM in 2026, and in Colombia, that makes you a welcome target among criminals.

His team reported an attempted theft of Sevilla’s bicycle through official channels, a report later supplemented by the victim himself. “I went to training today (Monday, ed.) at 8:20 a.m., and at Calle 170, I was intercepted by a motorcycle.”

According to Sevilla, things got heated after that. “They threatened me with a gun, but didn’t manage to steal my bike. They did take my cell phone, though. A police car drove by, and I reported the incident to them. They said there was nothing they could do.”
