Young Carmelite from Cameroon is now known as “venerable”

Br. Jean-Thierry died in 2006 at the age of 24. His life radiated holiness and many who knew him attest to his sanctity.

At the moment, there are no native canonized saints from Cameroon, but over the past decade several causes for canonization have progressed and are closer to an official proclamation of sainthood.

One such cause involves a young Carmelite friar who died in 2006 at the age of 24. Recently Pope Leo XIV declared him “venerable,” recognizing his life of “heroic virtue.”

This is one of the first steps in a cause for canonization, the next being beatification, which requires a miracle to be confirmed through his intercession.

Joy in the midst of suffering

Born in 1982 in Cameroon, Jean-Thierry was raised in a Catholic family and had an early desire to become a priest. This desire only increased after he received his First Communion, developing a deep interior life.

In 2000, he initially entered with the Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate in order to pursue the priesthood. However, after speaking with a cousin, who was a religious sister, he discerned that God was calling him to be a Discalced Carmelite.

He entered the Carmelite community in 2003, but in 2004, he suffered a great pain in his knee during a soccer match.

After a medical exam it was discovered that he had a serious bone tumor. This led to his leg being amputated.

He was transferred to a Carmelite community in Italy in order to receive better medical attention. While there, doctors discovered that the cancer has already spread and that chemotherapy was useless at this point.

Br. Jean-Thierry was given special permission to make his religious profession while in the hospital. In the midst of his suffering, Br. Jean-Thierry was radiant in joy and offered his suffering for others.

According to aciaAfrica, “Brother Jean-Thierry died in January 2006, after receiving the Eucharist during a Mass celebrated in his hospital room. Hours before slipping into a coma, he reportedly pointed to an image of Divine Mercy hanging on the wall and exclaimed in French, ‘How beautiful Jesus is!‘”

Many were inspired by his deep spiritual life and trust in God at such a young age. He continues to inspire those in Cameroon, being only the second individual from that region of Africa to be named “venerable.”
