Yemen’s Houthi Rebels Attack Saudi-Linked Oil Tanker

The attack is part of the maritime blockade announced by the Houthis against Saudi Arabia in July.

On Monday, the Houthi rebels in Yemen claimed to have attacked the Saudi-linked oil tanker Amzan with a ballistic missile in the northern Red Sea.

Houthi military spokesman Yahya Sarea stated that the attack was “precise and direct,” causing a fire on board and forcing other ships in the area to turn back.

The attack is part of the maritime blockade announced by the Houthis against Saudi Arabia in July, in retaliation for what they describe as a Saudi blockade of areas under their control in Yemen.

Sarea asserted that the operation is a response to the Houthi Armed Forces’ decision to impose a naval blockade and warned that they are prepared for an escalation with broader attacks.

The spokesman also reported two attacks against Saudi-backed military activities in Yemen: one against a convoy in Hadramawt, which destroyed more than ten trucks loaded with weapons.

The second attack targeted demonstrations in Al Kanayis, causing dozens of casualties, including Saudi officers and commanders, as well as the destruction of ammunition depots.

The attack on Amzan is the ninth in the Houthi campaign launched on July 20, which has forced dozens of Saudi oil tankers bound for Asia to retreat in the Red Sea.
