Yemeni government forces and Houthis clash near Taiz as tensions rise
Yemeni government forces and Houthi fighters have clashed north of the southwestern city of Taiz as tensions between the two sides continue to rise.
Fierce fighting broke out Tuesday along the Kalabah front north of Taiz, state-run Saba TRV reported, citing a private source, Anadolu Agency reported.
No immediate information was available on casualties or the extent of damage caused by the clashes.
The fighting comes amid a broader increase in tensions between Yemen’s internationally recognized government forces and the Houthis, with clashes reported in several parts of the country since July.
Violence has also been reported in Marib in central Yemen, Al-Jawf in northern Yemen, and Al-Dhale and Taiz in the southwest.
The latest clashes raise fresh concerns over the durability of the relative calm that had prevailed across much of Yemen since April 2022.
Yemen has endured years of conflict since the Houthis seized control of the capital, Sanaa, and large parts of the country in 2014. Government forces were subsequently backed by a Saudi-led coalition, while the Houthis have been supported by Iran.
The conflict has created one of the world’s most severe humanitarian crises and repeatedly threatened to draw regional powers deeper into the fighting.
With hostilities now resurfacing across several governorates, the latest clashes around Taiz could signal a further deterioration in Yemen’s fragile security situation.
