Yemen: STC Launches Legal Action to Document Rights Violations in Hadramout , the South

Aden — The Legal and Human Rights Affairs Authority of the Southern Transitional Council (STC) convened its regular meeting for August on Tuesday, chaired by Acting Head Dr. Mohammed Moqbel Saif, to review recent legal and rights developments across southern governorates.

Dr. Saif emphasized the importance of strengthening institutional performance, integrating legal and human rights efforts, and intensifying monitoring and documentation to uphold the rule of law and protect freedoms.

The meeting included a briefing from the legal team on ongoing cases and measures taken, particularly regarding recent events in Hadramout, where peaceful demonstrators marking the 55th anniversary of the Southern Army faced repression and arrests. Attendees also discussed the storming of the Southern Workers’ Union headquarters in Aden.

The Authority reviewed documentation of incidents in Hadramout from late August through early September, alongside a semi-annual rights report covering violations across southern governorates.

In its closing statement, the Authority reaffirmed its commitment to professional and independent legal and rights work, pledging to continue documenting violations, providing legal support, and engaging with local and international human rights bodies.

The STC stressed that these efforts aim to strengthen justice, protect freedoms, and serve the aspirations of southerners in building institutions founded on law and respect for human rights.
