Yemen : Houthi Escalation Marks New Phase With Targeted Attacks on Saudi Vessels

Sana’a – The Houthi escalation in the Red Sea has entered a new phase following a series of attacks on Saudi commercial vessels, in what The Maritime Executive described as a significant shift in the militia’s operational capabilities. 

The report suggested the Houthis are now relying on intelligence support linked to Iranian satellite systems to improve both target selection and execution.

The wave of attacks began with strikes on the Saudi oil tankers Layla and Encelia, followed by an assault on the Saudi‑flagged product tanker NCC Massa in the early hours of July 25. 

The vessel sustained only minor damage and continued its voyage. Analysts noted the importance of this target, as NCC Massa typically transports crude and chemical products between Saudi ports on the Red Sea, indicating the Houthis are expanding their operations to include domestic shipping routes, not just traffic through Bab al‑Mandeb.

According to the report, the latest pattern of attacks differs from earlier, more sporadic operations, pointing to enhanced precision and access to advanced maritime intelligence. 

The Houthis are believed to be moving beyond traditional coastal surveillance and fishing boat monitoring, instead leveraging near‑real‑time satellite imagery.

The publication highlighted that Iran has previously provided the Houthis with technical equipment enabling access to satellite data, including imagery from the Khayyam and Kanopus satellites, China’s Jilin‑1 constellation, and another imaging satellite acquired by Tehran in 2024. This, it argued, has significantly improved the militia’s ability to track and strike vessels with greater accuracy.
