Yemen Declares Health Emergency to Combat Measles Outbreak in Marib

Marib – The Yemeni government has declared a public health emergency in Marib governorate following a sharp rise in measles cases, as authorities race to contain the outbreak.

The Ministry of Health announced the emergency measures after hospitals and clinics in Marib reported a surge in infections, particularly among children. 

Officials warned that the situation poses a serious threat to public health, given the limited medical infrastructure and the large population of displaced families in the governorate.

Health authorities said the emergency plan includes strengthening disease surveillance, expanding vaccination campaigns, and mobilizing medical teams to affected districts. 

The ministry also urged international organizations to provide urgent support with vaccines, medical supplies, and humanitarian aid.

Local officials emphasized that the outbreak highlights the vulnerability of Yemen’s health system, which has been severely weakened by years of conflict. 

They stressed the need for rapid intervention to prevent further spread and reduce mortality rates.

The declaration comes amid growing concern from humanitarian agencies, who warn that measles outbreaks in Yemen could escalate without immediate action, especially in overcrowded camps and communities with poor access to healthcare.
