The Yemen Coast Guard, operating under the internationally recognized government, has intercepted a product tanker after it delivered cargo to the Houthi-controlled port of Ras Isa, according to a report by The Maritime Executive on September 7, 2026. The Houthis have not commented on the seizure, which is viewed as an escalation in the ongoing conflict between the militants and the Saudi-backed government.

The Houthis have intensified attacks on Saudi positions along the border, targeting military sites and supply convoys entering Yemen. This comes in addition to a blockade on Saudi shipping interests in the Bab al-Mandeb and Red Sea that the Houthis declared in July.

The Yemen Coast Guard stated that the tanker, previously linked to Iran, entered Ras Isa without the required permits. The vessel was supposed to obtain approval and undergo inspection by the UN Verification and Inspection Mechanism, a program in place for over a decade to prevent arms and banned materials from reaching the Houthis.

The tanker, identified as Nereida (35,994 dwt), was reported to be sailing without AIS transmissions. It has been under U.S. OFAC sanctions since February 2025, when it operated under the name Peterpaul (IMO: 9163269). The Coast Guard said the vessel briefly activated its AIS after leaving Ras Isa while heading toward the Bab al-Mandeb.

The tanker was reportedly sold in 2025 to unknown buyers, and its flag, previously listed as unknown, was changed to Comoros, though Equasis lists the flag as false.

Coast Guard patrol boats confronted the tanker after it entered the Gulf of Aden. The Coast Guard reported that the tanker initially failed to stop, and guards on the tanker fired at the patrol vessels. Eventually, the tanker complied with instructions and was escorted to the anchorage off Aden.
