World Cup Round of 32 live updates: Canada stuns South Africa to advance plus latest results and news

Stephen Eustáquio produced the biggest moment in Canadian men’s soccer history on Sunday.

Eustáquio scored a 92nd minute goal to give Canada a 1-0 win in the World Cup Round of 32 over South Africa. Eustáquio buried the shot after a headed clearance fell right in front of him at the top of the penalty box.

Stephen Eustáquio scored deep into stoppage time to lift Canada to a dramatic 1-0 victory over South Africa on Sunday in the opening match of the World Cup knockout stage. Captain Alphonso Davies made his tournament debut after missing the entire group stage with a hamstring injury and immediately provided a boost as Jesse Marsch’s side survived to keep its title hopes alive.

Canada’s attacks have petered out and South Africa has been the more dangerous team over the last few minutes. There are five minutes of added time.

Appollis forces a save but the shot was always going wide. South Africa still only has one shot on target as we enter the final five minutes of the game before added time.

Davies’ addition has made an immediate impact. Canada is already so much more dangerous down the left as Jonathan David has a shot from a tight angle parried away by Ronwen Williams.

The best chance of the second half so far comes in the 62nd minute from South Africa’s Oswin Appollis. His shot from the top left of the box just slices wide to the right.

The start of the second half hasn’t looked much different than the first so far. It’s been an underwhelming start to the Round of 32 through 54 minutes.

Canada needs to be better in the final third and South Africa would do well to be a lot more progressive in its attacks.
