World champions Spain started their UEFA Nations League with an entertaining 3-2 win over England at Wembley Stadium.

The Spanish got off to the perfect start when Lamine Yamal robbed Marc Guehi of possession to race clear on goal and calmly slotted home just two minutes into the contest.

The England defence was quite open in the early stages as the visitors squandered a big chance to double the lead on 15 minutes when Yamal turned provider to send Ferran Torres through on goal. However, the striker failed to beat James Trafford.

It took a while for the hosts to penetrate Spain’s defence but they got their reward in the 36th minute on the counter-attack when Anthony Gordon combined with Jude Bellingham before calmly slotting past Unai Simón.

Thomas Tuchel’s men completed the turnaround four minutes later when captain Harry Kane opened his account in the Nations League by nodding home a cross from Nico O’Reilly with the help of a deflection from Marc Cucurella.

England carried that momentum into the second period and should have added a third goal after being awarded a penalty on 54 minutes, but Kane was unable to capitalise after sending his spot-kick against the woodwork.

The hosts were made to rue that miss as Spain drew level on the hour mark when substitute Alex Baena was given time and space to curl one into the far corner from the edge of the box.

Spain then took the lead with 15 minutes remaining as Torres turned provider to play in Mikel Oyarzabal, who took the ball in his stride before calmly lobbing Trafford, sealing their eighth win in 11 matches against the Three Lions.
