Wolvaardt leads fresh-faced Proteas squad to Zimbabwe

Three uncapped players have been selected for the Proteas Women’s historic five-match T20I series in Bulawayo next month.

Laura Wolvaardt will captain South Africa in their first bilateral series against Zimbabwe, with all five matches taking place at Queens Sports Club.

Seamer Caitlin Wyngaard and spinner Luyanda Nzuza have earned maiden call-ups after impressing for the SA Emerging Women. SA U19 Women prospect Nthabiseng Nini is the third uncapped player included.

The trio will be joined by reigning domestic Pro20 Player of the Year Faye Tunnicliffe, Anneke Bosch, Ayanda Hlubi, Eliz-Mari Marx, Seshnie Naidu, Nondumiso Shangase and Miane Smit.

Regulars Sinalo Jafta, Karabo Meso, Kayla Reyneke and Annerie Dercksen provide further experience in a squad missing several players because of their franchise commitments.

“The tour to Zimbabwe is an exciting one for a few reasons,” said Proteas Women head coach Mandla Mashimbyi. “We’re preparing for our first trip as a team to our African neighbours, which is something very special to be a part of.”

“Nini, Nzuza and Wyngaard are youngsters whose development we’ve kept a close eye on over the last 12 to 18 months, and I can’t wait to see what they will bring to the international stage.”

The series begins on 11 September, with the fifth and final T20I scheduled for 19 September.
