Following the conclusion of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, the natural grass surface required by FIFA was removed from Gillette Stadium and replaced with artificial turf ahead of the New England Patriots’ 2026 season.

There was just one problem: the NFL didn’t approve it.

According to ESPN, the Patriots and New England Revolution had already vetted the newly installed artificial turf, which passed the necessary NFL and MLS field tests. However, the league ultimately determined that the surface was noncompliant, forcing another installation this week. ESPN’s Mike Reiss also said that an “E-layer” with a rubber shock pad underneath the turf will be used.

That decision apparently caught the organization by surprise. Patriots chief operating officer Jim Nolan pushed back on the league’s ruling and expressed confidence that the turf itself wasn’t the issue.

“We are confident the field would have passed if they had tested it in March without a pad, even over concrete,” Nolan said.

“The field we’re installing is the latest version of the field we took out in January,” Nolan continued. “From a player perspective, it will be incredibly consistent with what they played on last year.”

If the NFL determines a playing surface doesn’t meet its requirements, the organization has to address the issue before meaningful games begin. Player safety is far too important for the league to make exceptions, even if New England believes the previous surface was perfectly suitable. The NFL made its ruling, and Gillette Stadium is getting another makeover because of it.

The Patriots and Colts meet for their first preseason game on Thursday.
