WFP Warns of Further Deterioration in Yemen’s Food Security

Aden — The World Food Programme (WFP) has warned of worsening food insecurity in Yemen over the coming months, as households continue to struggle to meet basic needs for the third consecutive month.

In its latest food security report, WFP said field survey data showed food consumption gaps rose to 64% in June, reflecting growing difficulties families face in securing adequate nutrition. 

The report noted that 36% of households experienced severe food deprivation during the same period, while all governorates except al-Mahra surpassed the 20% threshold that indicates high levels of deprivation.

The agency attributed the decline to limited income opportunities during the lean season, rising food prices linked to ongoing regional conflict, and the continued erosion of household purchasing power.

Looking ahead, WFP expects conditions to deteriorate further as the lean season coincides with potential shocks from the El Niño phenomenon and reduced humanitarian response capacity.

The warning comes amid persistent economic and humanitarian challenges across Yemen, with urgent calls for expanded interventions to narrow food gaps and improve household access to essential supplies.
