The Story
A 2-0 Carling Knockout Cup exit at home to Stellenbosch FC on Wednesday evening gave Durban City head coach Eric Tinkler plenty to reflect on, with the coach bemoaning a lack of attacking threat and hinting that the cup elimination could be a blessing in disguise for their continental ambitions.
In a tight encounter where there was little to separate the two sides, Stellies came out on top courtesy of a late Sinoxolo Kwayiba brace.
Tinkler admitted that his side struggled to impose themselves and create clear-cut chances, stating that they gave away too many turnovers, which played into Stellies’ hands. The coach noted that they could have found a way back into the game in the last five minutes before Kwayiba’s dagger.

Tinkler also made mention of the quick turnaround in fixtures from their CAF Confederation Cup assignment in Mauritius on Sunday, stating that the exit from the Carling Knockout could be a blessing in disguise for Durban City’s season, despite wanting to compete for every competition on offer.
Staying on the topic of continental football, Tinkler also commented on Mamelodi Sundowns failing to reach the CAF Champions League group stages.
